Christmas was also celebrated in Viking age and even hundreds of years before that - before Christianity reached Northern Europe. In Scandinavian languages Christmas is still called "Jul" the ancient name that was also used when people believed in the Norse Mythology a thousand years ago. The word "Jul" probably comes from the same word as "hjul" which means "wheel" in Scandinavian - referring to the turning wheel of the year.
